"Authentic Movement and Performance: Imagining Brightly Colored Flowers, I Rise," is a groundbreaking film conceived, produced, and directed by Neala Haze, MA, ADTR. It represents some of her insights and interest in discovering a bridge between Authentic Movement and performance. She has been a leader in dance therapy, and founder and director of the Authentic Movement Institute. To purchase this film please see below. The film is a riveting look at the creative process, as three performing artists, under Neala’s direction, draw on Authentic Movement to develop and perform their own solo and group choreography. Their exploration here charts a new pathway, revealing how inner experience is transformed into art. The program documents the year-long journey of three talented modern dancers, Lysa Castro, Audrey Cooper, and Heike Wrede. Guided by Haze, and using the Authentic Movement form, these three advanced students at her Institute explore the juncture between the artist’s psyche and creative form. After her own brief movement sequence to set the tone, Haze begins the investigation by asking the artists to explore movement in the studio. This leads to their deeply personal scrutiny of internal impulses, memories and feelings (and their creative process), which these very articulate dancers express in movement, discussion, and filmed interviews. The material garnered through this format, known as authentic movement exploration, is next codified as choreography. The program culminates in a public performance, as the dancers present their choreographic creation based on the material unearthed during the process. Haze is a master teacher, and the video is an insight into the very internal Authentic Movement form. Authentic Movement has not previously been brought into performance at this level of artistic skill and professionalism. The film is a major contribution and advance in this field.
